Boring sponge-02This is a fragment of a gastropod shell from a Florida beach. Boring sponges (Cliona spp.) make the small excavations in the shells of gastropods and bivalves from marine sediments. The excavations are done by chemicals, enzymes (possibly carbonic anhydrase), and mechanically.
