802.16 Protocol Architecture
- The 802.16 standard only addresses the bottom 2 layers in the 7 layer ISO
model
- All layers above data link are independent of network architecture

- The 802.16 Standard replaces the physical and data link layers with:

- Physical layer specifies
- Transmission mediums
- Frequency bands
- Transmission layer specifies
- Encoding/decoding of bits
- Preamble generation and removal (synchronization)
- Bit transmission and reception
- The MAC layer specifies
- Assembling data into frames
- Error detection
- Disassembly and address recognition
- The MAC layer is also able to allocate radio channel capacity so as to
satisfy service demands
- Convergence Layer specifies
- Functions specific to the service being provided
- Encapsulating protocol data units (PDU) structure to upper layers in
stack
- Translate upper layer service demands to appropriate MAC header format
