As one story goes, the members of Led Zeppelin had tripped on LSD and all the while were searching for a hotel, but could not find a vacancy anywhere. "No Quarter" was supposedly written that night, after Tolkien's style of writing. However, I certainly do not think they were using "No Quarter" in terms of "No Vacancy." Nonetheless, I was previously unconvinced this song had any relation to Tolkien, besides the way it was written, until I recieved the following letters. Thay offer several different scenarios that could have inspired the song's lyrics..
Close the door, put out the light.
No they won't be home tonight.
The snow falls hard and don't you know,
The winds of Thor are blowing cold.
They're wearing steal that's bright and true,
They carry news that must get through.
They choose a path where no one goes.
They hold no quarter, they hold no quarter.
Walking side by side with death
The Devil mocks their every step.
The snow drives back the foot that's slow,
The dogs of doom are howling more.
They carry news that must get through
To build a dream for me and you.
The dogs of doom in The Lord of the Rings are the Wargs, wolves in the service of Sauron. Thor, in Norse mythology, is the great Thunder-god. Our Thursday originates from his name.
