Home Page Helmuth F. Orthner, Ph.D., is Professor and Director of the graduate Health Informatics Program in the Department of Health Services Administration, School of Health Related Professions, The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He holds a secondary as Professor in the Department of Computer and Information Sciences, School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, and as a Sr. Scientist in the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center, School of Medicine, UAB. He received his Bachelors Degree from the Higher Technical Institute (Division of Electrical Engineering), Innsbruck, Austria, the M.S. (Dipl. Ing.) degree from the Technical University of Munich (Institut für Nachrichtentechnik), Munich, Germany, and his Ph.D. degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. From 1972 to 1994 he was on the faculty of The George Washington University Medical Center (GWUMC) in Washington, DC, as an Instructor, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and since 1985 as Professor of Computer Medicine. From 1989 to 1993 he was also Director of the Office of Academic Computer Services of the School of Medicine at GWUMC. From 1993 to 1998 was Professor of Medical Informatics at the University of Utah School of Medicine in Salt Lake City, Utah. Dr. Orthner is a Fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics (ACMI) and founding member of the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA). Mailing Address:
