Saturn Biographies:
I first heard Sun Ra played on WYSO around 1964 when I was just a teenager around age 16. I thought it was real far out and very humorous and totally unlike anything I had ever heard before.
Many years later in 12-75 a friend at work asked me if I would do a 3 hour jazz show on WYSO and I said "OK". The station"s management liked my show so much they said I would have my own show if I wanted it & I've been on the air ever since.
WYSO is a Public Radio Station that broadcasts from Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio on 91.3 FM. with 37,000 Watts. Back then, it broadcasted at a much lower power and the station was legendary for both being hard to pick up on a radio and being a very freeform station where the best shows in all of radio were found. There's a good chance that you may of heard of WYSO back in the 60's, 70's, or 80's. It was known throughout the hip community all over America & overseas as well. I have been stopped by people in Hawaii, Florida, & New York who saw me wearing my WYSO T-shirt who want to talk about the radio station.
The station has changed quite a bit since the legendary free-wheeling days of yore. WYSO is more responsible & grown up ( = more like the every other Public Radio Station). The management of WYSO and Antioch College still want 24 hours per week jazz programming and 23 of these hours are done by local hosts like myself.
See our WYSO's web site. I usually am on Wednesday nights from 10:00 p.m. until midnight. WYSO expects to be on Real Audio by the end of summer so if you are anywhere on this planet with a computer and a modem you would be able to hear the live programs (like mine).
I am known on The Saturn List as SUN RA KAT.
