A Little Web Music
Midi, MP3 and ModsHope you've got you're sound card set-up correctly and in fact that you've have a sound card with good midi instruments such as a quality grand piano, acoustic bass-- a sub-woofer is nice too.
MIDI FILES
If you want to listen to some of my music while you are on this site and you have a good sound card with wavetable sound and your midi-plugin installed try clicking on the following selections:
To hear a jazz trio dedicated to bassist Scott Lafaro click here.
To hear a recent trio for bass percussion and trumpets ala Thad Jones click here.
MP3
Mpeg 3 is a high quality media compression format, in this case used for audio. The files here are my own performances of original improvisations or compositions. To save space they are in mono and stream at around 128kbs - so unless you have a high speed connection you might want to download the file to play from a hard drive by right clicking on the files.
1. Click here for a new original mpeg3 performance --
new route 66 orchet (west coasty hip to hop bass!)
2. Check-out (right-click to download) a portion of a
modern chamber music MP3 file by clicking here.
3.Click here for some mpeg3 historic, archival audio
from prehysteric Tuscaloosa, Alabama...
MODS
The MOD format started on the Amiga several years ago and is a rather unique construction form for an entirely new musical format. Basically, samples are sequenced and then compressed into a "song" format (of which there many on the PC and Amiga). This song then contains both the digital samples and the sequencing information. If you don't have a MOD player on your system they are available in both plug-in and freestanding formats from www.castlex.com.
I suggest getting the freestanding format because you'll want to play the best songs when you're not on the NET anyway and its got a kool 20 band graphic equalizer. The fidelity of this format is excellent and it will stream in realtime from most servers better than any other digital audio format in it's original sound quality.
Try this crazy improv MOD as a test file.
A huge number of MODS are available for downloading at www.modarchive.com.Disclaimer
Music formats on the Web can be an adventure, so if you've got a good sound card and want to explore, welcome. If you don't know what a midi file is, your system may or may not know, the only way to find out is to click on one and see if your browser can play the file. The same goes for mpeg3 (mp3) and other music types on this site.
